University of Idaho senior Kayla Mortellaro is bound for her
fourth NCAA Regional Golf Competition when she heads to Erie, Colo., May 10-12,
and Colorado National Golf Club for the West Regional Tournament.
Mortellaro, the most successful golfer in Idaho history with
10 tournament titles and back-to-back Western Athletic Conference
championships, wants to take this regional one step further – to the National
Championship Tournament.
“I want to go to Nationals,” said Mortellaro, who tied for
27th as a freshman, tied for 38th as a sophomore and tied
for 25th last year’s regional. “That’s the one thing that I’ve not
been able to do.”
The top two individuals who are not members of a qualifying
team advance to the NCAA Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club May 22-25
at Franklin, Tenn.
Mortellaro is a three-time winner this season with victories
at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Intercollegiate and the Dr. Donnis Thompson
Invitational as well as the WAC tournament – a hard-fought title that took four
playoff holes to secure. Her national prep is concentrating on the good from
this season’s tournaments.
“I’m trying to focus, keep a good rhythm,” she said. “At
this point, I’m trying to maintain what I’ve been able to accomplish the last
couple of events.”
