|Women's tennis No. 6 in region|
MOSCOW, Idaho - After going 19-8 in 2012 and advancing to the Western Athletic Conference semifinals, the Idaho women's tennis team earned a No. 6 regional ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Mountain Region.
The No. 6 regional ranking is the highest in Idaho's program history.
"It's exciting to see the girls get recognized for their hard work this year," Head coach Dan Pollock said. "They have had a groundbreaking year on a number of levels, and the youth of the team means that the program has an exciting future.
"If the team continues to work hard and maintains the desire to improve that they showed this year, there is no reason why they can't continue to receive greater recognition year after year."
In addition to Idaho's team ranking, Vandal sophomores Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz were each ranked in singles and as a doubles team. Lozano checked in at No. 16 in singles while Sanz is just behind at No. 19. The pairing are ranked No. 8 in the region in doubles.
Lozano posted a 19-8 singles record in 2012, including an 18-8 mark at No. 1. Sanz went 19-7 in singles play, with an 18-7 mark at No. 2 and a 1-0 record at No. 1. As a doubles team, the two went 10-5, all at the No. 1 spot.
Lozano and Sanz each earned all-WAC honors in 2012 as well. Lozano was a first-team all-WAC selection in singles, and Sanz was a second-team all-WAC honoree, and as a doubles pairing the two made the all-WAC first team.
"Even though they realize it has been a strong season for Vandal women's tennis, none of them were satisfied with the semifinal loss at the WAC Tournament and I know they are all hungry to go further next year," Pollock said.
