BOISE, Idaho – Idaho women’s soccer found disappointment in the first game of the Bronco Invitational tournament on Friday with several missed opportunities in a 2-0 loss to Idaho State at the Boas Soccer Complex.

Idaho (2-3-0) surrendered a pair of first-half goals and failed to capitalize on several second-half scoring chances against its in-state rival. Idaho State (4-0-0) struck in the 16th minute on a counter-attack, then put in a shot off a corner kick at 18:25 to complete the game’s scoring.

“We were out-hustled and out-worked by a team that was hungry for the game, and we didn’t respond to that,” Idaho head coach Peter Showler said. “Basic defending and basic set pieces cost us dearly today.”

Despite going down early, the Vandal women managed to work the ball into offensive zones and earn scoring opportunities several times in the remainder of the game. Showler said the team had opportunities in front of the net, but didn't finish those shots.

“If we don’t finish the chances when they’re created, we can’t expect to win games,” Showler said.

Idaho State outshot Idaho overall just 14-13 and both teams had six on-target attempts. The Vandal women also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. ISU keepers Maria Dela Cruz and Sheridan Hapsic split halves and combined for six saves, while Idaho senior Liz Boyden made four saves in 90 minutes.

Senior forward Chelsea Small led Idaho with three shots on the day, while nine total Idaho players registered at least one shot in the contest.

The Vandals will wrap up their action at the tournament on Sunday morning when they play Montana at 10:30 a.m. (PT) at the Boas Soccer Complex. The Griz enter the weekend at 1-3-0 and play Boise State in Friday’s late game at the tournament.
