Consistency. That is the key word for the Idaho Vandals as they head to Louisiana Tech to take on the Bulldogs, who were ranked 23rd nationally before last weekend’s shoot-out loss to Texas A&M.

“We have to make plays when given the opportunity is the bottom line,” coach Robb Akey said.

Kickoff is 6 p.m. local/ 4p.m. Pacific. The game airs on ESPN3.

In taking on the Bulldogs, Idaho faces a team that is ranked No. 1 in the Western Athletic Conference in rush offense, total offense, scoring offense, net punting and sacks allowed. Louisiana Tech’s 53.83 points per game is the best in the country.

“They’re a good football team,” said Akey, complimenting the play of Tech quarterback Colby Cameron and his leading receiver Quinton Patton. “They have some skilled players that run well in all three phases of the game. Their fronts have good size to them.”

Idaho counters with a team that has shown great promise in all three phases but hasn’t had the consistency throughout the course of a game.

“What I’m talking about is consistency of the good things,” he said. “Focus on what it is that we’re capable of doing. Get those other things out of your mind. Snap back. Take care of the ball. Win the sudden change.”

THE RECORDS
The Vandals are 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference after falling last Saturday at Texas State. Louisiana Tech is 5-1 overall and opens WAC play against the Vandals.
THE COACHES
Robb Akey is in his sixth season as head coach at Idaho. After rebuilding in his first two seasons, his 2009 team won the Humanitarian Bowl and his 2010 team was on the verge of repeating as a bowl team. He is a graduate of Weber State University and coached for his alma mater (1988-94) as well as Northern Arizona University (1995-98) and Washington State University (1999-2006) before taking over at Idaho in his first head coaching job.
Sonny Dykes is in his third season as Louisiana Tech’s head coach – his first head coaching post. Prior to taking over at Louisiana Tech, he was an assistant at Arizona (2007-09), Texas Tech (2000-06), Kentucky (1999), Northeast Louisiana (1998) and Kentucky (197). He was a high school coach for three seasons before joining the college ranks. He is a graduate of Texas Tech, where he played baseball.
THE SERIES
This is the eighth game between the Vandals and the Bulldogs. Louisiana Tech leads the series 5-2 with Idaho’s victories at Moscow (35-34) in 2009 and at Ruston (24-14) in 2006. Of the seven games, two were decided by one touchdown or less.
TELEVISION
The game is on ESPN Regional (ESPN3) with Trey Bender calling the play-by-play and Jay Taylor providing the analysis.
RADIO
Tom Morris (play by play) and Evan Ellis (analysis) again are calling the gameday action with KZFN (FM 106.1) as the flagship of the statewide, 14-station network.
VANDAL CAPTAINS
Idaho’s captains for the 2012 season are receiver Mike Scott (senior; Palo Alto, Calif.), cornerback Aaron Grymes (senior; Seattle, Wash), and punter Bobby Cowan (senior; Vancouver, Wash.).
ONTO THE FIELD
The Vandals have added a third element to their entrance onto the playing field. Traditionally, they have carried an American Flag and a battle ax commemorating the tradition of the Vandal. This year, they’ve added a flag that honors the memory of former Idaho receiver Ken McRoyal, who died last summer.
