University of Idaho graduate Kayla Mortellaro has had the same dream since she was five years old – she wants to play golf on the LPGA Tour.

All summer, Mortellaro, a 2012 graduate and three-time Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Year, has been closing in on that goal as she has worked her way to the final stage of the LPGA’s Qualifying School. This means battling to the first two phases and, literally, beating our hundreds of other players seeking the elusive playing card.

“Playing on the LPGA Tour has been a dream of mine since I was five years old,” Mortellaro said. “I feel honored to have the opportunity to chase after my dreams.”

Her journey began with the first round of Q School at Daytona Beach, Fla., where, over the course of four days (Sept. 4-7), Mortellaro put together rounds of 71-72-69-70 to finish at six-under 282 and in 11th place. Next was the Oct. 9-12 second stage where she had rounds of 73-70-74-76 for a five-over 293 – good enough for a tie for 50th and a ticket to the final stage.

It’s back to Daytona Beach for the final phase, which is Nov. 28-Dec. 2.

“Stage III is the final chance to play my way onto the LPGA Tour,” said Mortellaro, who called the road to the LPGA Tour a ‘grueling and mentally taxing process.’ “It is exciting but at the same time I want to continue working to give myself the best opportunity to play great golf.”

Earning and maintaining playing cards is the way for professional golfers. While the LPGA Tour is the goal, Mortellaro has secured a spot on the Symetra Tour – the official development tour for the LPGA.

“The Symetra Tour gives me a full schedule to play in 2013 as well as the chance to earn my way onto the LPGA tour the following year based on my play,” she said. “These two chances are phenomenal and I hope, with the support of the many Vandal fans, I can make the University proud.”
