DENVER - After opening the spring season with a pair of wins at No. 1 singles and doubles, Idaho senior men's tennis player Abid Akbar was selected as the Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the week.
Akbar, a senior from Islamabad, Pakistan also earned WAC Player of the Month honors twice last fall (in September and November). Akbar beat Eastern Washington's Joseph Cohen 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and teamed up with Marius Cirstea to beat Cohen and Eduardo Martinez 8-6 at No. 1 doubles as Idaho beat the Eagles 7-0 in the 2013 opener on Sunday. "Abid has really taken his game to a new level and for our senior team captain to lead by example in our first spring match is what a coach wants to see," Beaman said. Akbar and Cirstea are ranked No. 46 in the nation in doubles, and No. 1 in the Mountain Region. |
