PORTLAND, Ore. - The Idaho women's tennis team dropped three matches over the weekend, losing 7-0 to No. 66 Oregon, 6-1 to Portland and 5-2 to Portland State.
The Vandals fall to 0-4 on the season with the losses.
Idaho's Constance Alexander and Belena Barcenilla got an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles against Oregon, but the Ducks won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and 8-3 at No. 3 to win the point. Victoria Lozano gave Idaho its best shot at a singles victory, but fell 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1, as Oregon won all six singles matches in straight sets.
The Vandals won the doubles point against Portland, as Lozano and Almudena Sanz won 8-4 at No. 1 and Alexander and Barcenilla won 8-5 at No. 2. Portland, however, won all six singles matches to take the 6-1 victory.
Against Portland State, the Vandals won in straight sets at the top two singles spots, as Lozano won 6-2, 6-4 and Sanz won 6-2, 6-3. But an injury to Alejandra Lozano that forced her to retire during her No. 3 doubles match also forced an already shorthanded Idaho team to forfeit its No. 6 singles match, and the Vandals fell 5-2.
"Our first road trip was tough and obviously losing these three matches hurts, but overall we put a good effort and were close as a team," Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said. "Moving forward, we will have to work on being ready for those long matches and learn how to play on the road as we will be traveling for most of our season. We will keep fighting and the key is to come together as a team and regain confidence to turn our season around."
The Vandals return to action with a trip to Boise to face Idaho State on Feb. 9 and Boise State on Feb. 10.
