Looking Forward
Idaho hosts three meets this week, starting on Friday with the 37th Annual Vandal Indoor. The team hosts the Vandal Collegiate on Saturday and the Vandal Open on Sunday. All three meets are presented by Runners Soul of Spokane. Friday's action will feature an indoor discus throw competition starting at 11 a.m. The main meet starts with field events at 5 p.m. (PT) and track events at 6 p.m. The Saturday and Sunday meets will kick off at 9 a.m. at the Kibbie Dome. Idaho welcomes teams from Washington State, Central Washington, Whitworth, Western Oregon, Warner Pacific, Saint Martin's, Linfield and Community Colleges of Spokane this week.

Historically Speaking
Last year's Vandal Indoor saw some of the top performances in the country, as well as an Idaho school record and six individual wins for Vandals. Liga Velvere won the women's 800m in a school-record time of 2:07.63. Alycia Butterworth (4:57.06) and Barry Britt (4:12.84) took the women's and men's mile crowns, respectively, while Kristine Leonard won the women's indoor discus (158-3). Idaho also snagged 4x400m relay wins on both the men's (3:18.21) and women's (3:45.49) sides at the meet. Last time Idaho hosted the Vandal Collegiate in 2012, the team produced four individual wins and 20 total career-best marks in its final meet leading up to the WAC Indoor Championships.

A Quick Recap
Idaho's quartet of Karlene Hurrel, Lauren Schaffer, Keli Hall and Liga Velvere broke the school record in the women's 4x400m relay for the 200-meter flat track standard with a time of 3:49.41 to highlight Idaho's weekend at the Cougar Indoor. Hurrel added personal bests in both the women's 60m (7.76) and 200m (24.41), while Velvere took the win in the women's 400m at 56.32. Ben Ayesu-Attah provided a highlight finish in the men's 400m, where he out-leaned Washington State's Jacob Sealby to win the event with a personal-best and meet-record time of 47.53. Junior Andrew Bloom took third in the same race with a career-best 47.96 to give the duo the top two WAC times in the event so far this season. Sophomore Johanna Höcketstaller was a double-winner in the women's long jump (17-8.75) and shot put (46-9.5) at the meet, while junior Hannah Kiser opened her season with a WAC-leading 4:48.34 in the women's mile.

Tops in the WAC
Through three weeks of competition, Vandals lead the WAC in three events. On the men's side, sophomore Ben Ayesu-Attah and junior Andrew Bloom are first and second in the 400m at 47.53 and 47.96. Senior Liga Velvere leads the women's 800m at 2:10.07 and junior Hannah Kiser's mile time of 4:48.34 is tops in the WAC on the women's side.

Another Meet Record
Sophomore sprinter Ben Ayesu-Attah broke the WSU Open meet record in the men's 400m on Jan. 12 in his season opener. He made it a two-for-two effort on that track on Jan. 26 when he claimed the individual win in the same event with a Cougar Indoor meet record of 48.28 (before track size conversion).

Record Breakers
At the Cougar Indoor on Jan. 26, Idaho's 4x400m relay team of Karlene Hurrel, Lauren Schaffer, Keli Hall and Liga Velvere posted a second-place time of 3:49.41. It was the fastest time in Idaho school history on a flat, 200-meter track and bested the previous standard of 3:49.76, which had stood since 1997. It's the third career Idaho indoor record book entry for Velvere, who also holds the 400m and 800m records, and the second for Schaffer, who broke Idaho's 600m record earlier this year. The record is an indoor career first for Hall and Hurrel.
