SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It was an historic day for University of Idaho swimming and diving as two Vandals – Rachel Millet and Paige Hunt, won individual events at the Western Athletic Conference Championship Meet.

“It was pretty awesome,” coach Mark Sowa said after the second day of the four-day meet. “They’re feeding off of each other right now.”

The morning’s preliminary events set the stage for the championship night with Millet winning the 200 individual medley and Hunt capturing the 3-meter diving competition. Millet’s morning swim (2:00.37) was more than three seconds faster than her own school record with her winning time in the evening just a whisper slower (2:00.39).

As for Hunt, she won by almost 11 points with a school record 319.05 after a morning score of 284.45. Sowa said it was intensity saved in the morning that led to excellence at night.

“She learned from (Wednesday’s 1-meter event),” Sowa said. “She was not as emotional in the prelims. She went to another level in the finals. She stayed within herself. She was incredibly poised.”

Sowa was quick to note the Vandals’ current fourth-place standing is a result of more than the victories.

“It’s awesome to win,” he said, “but they’re not out there by themselves.”

Idaho is picking up key points throughout the events. Erica Anderson broke the 50-meter freestyle record with her 23.25 – good enough for seventh and worth 12 points to the team effort.

Likewise were Lyndsay Williams’ 12^th and Kelsie Saxe’s 15 in the 100 IM as well as Mairin Jameson’s seventh, Kelsi Potterf’s 10^th and Delaney Peugh’s 15^th in the 3-meter diving.

Northern Arizona is leading after two days with a 295 followed by San Jose State (289), Denver University (213.5), Idaho 171, New Mexico State 144.5, Northern Colorado 122, North Dakota 111, Cal State Bakersfield 91 and Seattle University 60.
