|Women's tennis sweeps EWU|
MOSCOW - The Idaho women's tennis team picked up a 7-0 win against Eastern Washington in the Kibbie Dome on Wednesday night, but the match was much closer than the final score may indicate.
The Vandals earned the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles from Victoria Lozano and Sophie Vickers and an 8-1 win at No. 3 by Alejandra Lozano and Beaty Flores. EWU won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles but Idaho had already secured the point.
Eastern Washington forced three-set matches in four of the six singles contests, but Idaho came out ahead in each. Victoria Lozano won 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1, Sanz won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No.2, Alexander won 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 at No. 3 and Flores won 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 at No. 5. Belen Barcenilla added a tight 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 4 and Alejandra Lozano won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
"We came back from a long and tough weekend but we took advantage of not traveling for nine hours and having matches back-to-back-to-back. It was nice to be able to benefit from the home court advantage and having the crowd behind us," Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said. "The girls really felt the support from everybody."
Idaho improves to 4-7 on the season with the win. The Vandals hit the road this weekend when they travel to New Orleans, La., to face Youngstown State on March 10 and Xavier of Louisiana on March 12.
