SEATTLE - The No. 63 Idaho men's tennis team responded from its first loss of the season with a pair of wins to wrap up the weekend, beating No. 73 St. Mary's 5-2 and Seattle U 7-0.
Idaho won the doubles point against St. Mary's, and clinched the match with some gutty wins in singles. Jose Bendeck's 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 was Idaho's only straight-set singles win, as Dmitry Perevoshchikov won 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 at No. 1, Marius Cirstea won 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 at No. 3 and Cristobal Ramos Salazar won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.
"It was great to see how most of the guys showed up and competed against a very tough St. Mary's team," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "This is a match that at times we were on the verge of losing but Marius, Cristobal and Dmitry really stepped up huge, gutting out third-set wins under pressure."
Idaho wrapped up the weekend with a clean sweep of Seattle U. The Vandals won at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, and picked up straight-set wins at all six singles spots.
"It's great to get another conference win and to have the team start a new winning streak," Beaman said of Idaho's win over Seattle U.
The Vandals improve to 13-1 on the season and 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. They will return to action with three matches in Hawai'i during the week, as they face Liberty on March 13, and Hawai'i and Whitman College on March 15, all in Honolulu.
