|WTEN edges Youngstown State|
NEW ORLEANS, La. - A 6-4, 7-5 win from Almudena Sanz at No. 2 singles tilted the decision in the favor of the Idaho women's tennis team on Sunday as the Vandals beat Youngstown State 4-3.
The Vandals have now won four out of their last six matches and improve to 5-7 on the season. Youngstown State drops to 7-5 on the season with the loss.
"The team fought really hard today and it was a really good win for us," Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said.
For Sopel, the win meant a little extra, as she was coaching against her brother Mickeal Sopel, an assistant coach for YSU.
"It was really nice to beat my brother, that made it even more special," she said.
The Vandals won the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 from Sanz and Victoria Lozano and an 8-2 win at No. 2 from Rita Bermudez and Beaty Flores. Belen Barcenilla won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles and Flores won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 before Sanz clinched the victory with her win at No. 2.
The Vandals return to action March 12 when they face Xavier of Louisiana, the No. 10 ranked team in NAIA.
