SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of Idaho track and field team competed with a petite group of athletes to open the outdoor season Thursday and Friday at the Whitworth Buc Scoring Invite.

Both the Vandal men and women’s team concluded the meet in third place. The Idaho men tailed 51 points during the two day contest, finishing 17 points ahead of fourth place Gonzaga University, while the women claimed four top-places and totaled 38 points over-all.

The Idaho travel squad consisted of mainly field athletes, with a few runners in the mix. Head Track and Field Coach Julie Taylor said overall she was very happy with the group of throwers.

“It was just overall a good day for throwers,” Taylor said. “We had a number of athletes hit career and season best marks.”

Leading the way for the Idaho women was returning sophomore Johanna Hocketstaller, who won the women’s shot put with a toss of 46-2 (14.07m). She also placed third in the javelin throw (132-8, 40.45m) and fourth in the discus throw (134-4, 40.96m).

Also key for the women was seniors Sarah Nutsch and Ellen Rouse, who both claimed first-place finishes in their respective events. Nutsch won the hammer throw posting a mark of 174-7 (53.21m) and Rouse’s mark of 139-2 (42.43m) captured the javelin throw.

On the track side, junior Cait Rowland claimed the individual title in the 400m hurdles, posting a time of 1:08.64.

For the men, freshman Santos Vargos won the steeplechase posting a time of 9:42.64, while junior Andrew Bloom ran a career-best time in the 800m with a time of 2:00.8. Sophomore Jesse Villines also ended the day with a career-best time of 56.26 in the 400m hurdles.
