MOSCOW, Idaho - Neither team was able to find the net Saturday as University of Idaho soccer team tied Central Washington 0-0 after a sudden-death overtime game.

“There are things that we can learn from those types of games,” University of Idaho coach Pete Showler said. “We gave them a lot of opportunities. I didn't feel that they earned them as much as us giving the ball away in dangerous areas and that’s not good enough for this level.”

Defense was a key element in Saturday as neither team was able to create very many opportunities to score.

“I was a little disappointed at times where we could have stepped to the ball and taken care of the ball a lot more readily,” Showler said. “Yes, they’re a physical team and they do a very good job of what they do and how they do it but we’re smart enough and astute enough to get our body across and take care of the ball.”

Spring is a good time for all teams to improve before the season and Showler can see areas that need improving.

“It was a sloppy game all around,” Showler said. “It made it hard for us. We didn’t deal with it as well as we needed to but there are a lot of things that can be learned from that and we’ve got to take the positives and we have to improve in some areas. That’s what spring is about. It’s a development stage. We’ll dissect the film and see where we did well and where we didn’t.”

The Vandals have another opportunity to improve in the spring Sunday as they take on Walla Walla Community College at 1 p.m. on the SprinTurf.

“We have to control what we can control and I don’t think we did that as well as we can,” Showler said. “The nice thing is that we have tomorrow and we can step up and take care of what we didn’t take care of today.”
