SPOKANE, Wash. – After dropping back-to-back matches, the Idaho women’s tennis team got back on the right track with a 5-2 win at Gonzaga on Wednesday night.
The Vandals improve to 9-10 on the season with the win.
"It was a great match to get ready for our three conference matches this weekend,” Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said. “It was a good intense match, and the girls played very well across the board.”
Idaho earned the doubles point to start the match after Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz won 8-4 at No. 1 and Rita Bermudez and Beaty Flores won 8-3 at No. 3.
Idaho got wins at the top four singles positions from Lozano, Sanz, Constance Alexander and Flores to seal the 5-2 win. Bermudez retired at No. 5 singles and Alejandra Lozano lost a tight match a No. 6, falling 7-5, 7-6.
“We came out really strong from the first point on, and we did not allow ourselves any setback going into singles,” Sopel said. “I am very confident going into our matches this weekend.”
The Vandals will play their next three matches at home, hosting Seattle U (April 12), San Jose State (April 13) and Texas State (April 14) in Western Athletic Conference play before wrapping up the regular season at Utah State on April 20. The WAC tournament is April 25-28 in Denver.
