Cockerill tied for sixth

HENDERSON, Nev. – The University of Idaho men’s golf team is tied for fourth but just eight strokes out of first after the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Rio Secco Golf Club.

The Vandals, led by Aaron Cockerill’s one-under 71, are tied with UT Arlington with a 294. New Mexico State is the first-day leader with a 286 with Utah State second at 292 and UT San Antonio third at 293.

Cockerill is tied for sixth but is just two strokes back of first-day leader J.J. Lindsey of UTSA. Lindsey shot a three-under 69. Also for the Vandals Sean McMullen is tied for 15th with a one-over 73 with Gordon Webb tied for 21st with a 74, Zach Wanderscheid tied for 28th with a 76 and Dylan Baker tied for 38th with a 78.

Cockerill had four birdies in his round, which was marred only by a double-bogey six on the ninth hole and a bogey five on the 14th.
