|Vandals sweep T&F Weekly awards|
DENVER – Idaho track and field athletes swept the Western Athletic Conference weekly awards, the league announced Tuesday, as Liga Velvere and Kristine Leonard earned women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week, while Jesse Villines and Joseph Charles earned the same honors on the men’s side.
Velvere, a senior from Saldus, Latvia (Latvian Academy of Sport Education), ran a season-best time of 58.64 in the 400m hurdles Saturday at the Vandal Jamboree. Her first-place finish ranks second in the WAC, 13th in the NCAA West and 32nd in the NCAA this season.
Leonard, a senior from Rathdrum, Idaho (Concordia University), took the individual title in the discus throw Saturday at the Vandal Jamboree. She then went on to post the second-best mark in the shot put with a toss of 14.90m (48-10.75). Leonard ended the meet with a third-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.55m (175-8). Her shot put and hammer throw marks were both career-bests and improved her all-time top-10 entries at Idaho. Her Hammer throw mark ranks fifth in the WAC while her discus throw is sixth this season.
Villines, a sophomore from Soda Springs, Idaho, made his way into the NCAA West top-48 with his career-best performance in the 400m hurdles Saturday at the Vandal Jamboree. His time of 52.68 ranks 43rd in the NCAA West, fifth in the WAC and 83rd in the nation this season.
Charles, a senior from Bronx, N.Y. (Bronx CC), had two personal best performances at the Vandal Jamboree Saturday. He opened the day with a career-best toss of 68.10m (53-6.5) in the shot put. He then fired off a career-best 50.16m (167-7) to take third in the discus throw. His discus throw mark ranks sixth in the WAC this season.
