Punter Bobby Cowan and safety Gary Walker are living their dreams – the dream every little boy who ever played football has. Playing in the National Football League.

Both have the free agent contracts in hand that give them the coveted access to the NFL – Cowan with the Oakland Raiders and Walker with the Baltimore Ravens. Both have rookie mini camps on the horizon followed by the regular camp for all the players later in the summer. What they show and how they progress over the next few months will determine their NFL futures.

“What little kid doesn’t want to be a professional football player,” Cowan said, quickly adding, “It’s not quite a reality yet. I have to go win the job.”

Cowan, one of the best punters in University of Idaho history, is after one of just 32 punting jobs in the country. On top of that, he needs to hone his holding skills for the Raiders’ kicker – Sebastian Janikowski, who, unlike Trey Farquhar for whom Cowan held on field goals and PATs for the past four years, is a lefty.

“I’m just excited getting invited and having a place to go compete,” he said.

Walker will have the chance not only to play at safety but cornerback and on special teams. He plans to make his mark – much like he did at a Ravens’ camp last weekend.

“I just worked hard and showed what I can do,” said Walker, a defensive leader for the Vandals the past two seasons. “I put my best foot forward. I’m blessed to be in this situation.”
