Kelly Gufford is now entering into the second season with the University of Idaho as the Vandals head diving coach.

In her first year as head diving coach, Gufford was named WAC Diving Coach of the Year as her divers broke all of the school diving records and won all of the diving events at the WAC Championship meet. Senior diver Mairin Jameson won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events and broke the Idahoschool record for both events at the WAC Championship meet. Jameson also competed at the NCAA Zone E Diving meet and was named WAC Diver of the Year. Senior diver Paige Hunt placed second in both the 1-and 3-meter diving events at the WAC meet. She won and broke the record for the platform event at the WAC Championship meet as well. Hunt was also a finalist in the 1- and 3-meter diving event at the NCAA Zone E Diving meet.

“We are thrilled to have Kelly joining our Vandal Family,” Sowa said. “Coach Gufford comes to us having mentored under one of the best coaches in the world. I am very confident that her skills, enthusiasm and love for this sport will continue our development into one of the best diving programs in the West.

“We are lucky to have someone of her caliber joining our staff. This continues to illustrate that our program is on the rise.”

Gufford came to Idaho from North Carolina where she served as the head coach of The American School for Diving, a club program jointly operated at Duke University and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She worked under the direction of 2012 U.S. Olympic head coach Drew Johansen as well as two time diving Olympian Jenny Johansen, Duke University head coach Nunzio Esposto and 2012 Olympic meet director Katherine Hazelton.

“I am honored and elated to be a Vandal,” Gufford said. “My biggest dream always has been to lead a Division I diving team and that dream is now a reality.

“I am excited to share with this team all of the knowledge and enthusiasm I have gained from years of training under the best coaches in the country. The University of Idaho swimming and diving program is very accomplished and I am thrilled to be a part of its continued successes.”

Prior to her time in North Carolina, she owned and operated a large club program in Omaha, Nebraska. While in Nebraska, Gufford was recognized as one of the top diving coaches in the state for club and high school diving. Gufford coached on four state champion teams and two first runner-up state champion teams. Individually, she coached three divers to All-American consideration, had more than 25 state qualifiers, coached four conference champions in two conferences, broke more than 20 school records in three high schools, sent several divers to compete in the NCAA, and had numerous national qualifiers. Most recently, one of her club divers was named NISCA All-American which is the highest honor at the high school level.

Gufford is a 2004 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Kearney, where she was a member of the diving team. She earned NCAA Division II Student-Athlete honors while earning her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice/Pre-Law.
