|Vandals Set for WAC Play|
MOSCOW, Idaho—The Idaho Vandals Soccer team begins conference play at home on Sunday. Pete Showler’s squad will welcome in Western Athletic Conference newcomers, Grand Canyon. The Vandals 0-7 start is a thing of the past and they are looking forward to the second half of the season.
“We have had review stages,” Showler said before practice on Thursday. “We have had review sessions after the exhibition game, the non-conference season and now we will move on to the conference season. The girls have set goals for themselves. Our aim is to attain those goals, to push towards them and hopefully break through them. The main focus is to get to the WAC tournament and win it.”
The Vandals are coming off a heartbreaking finish to the non-conference season. Both Eastern Washington and UNLV came to Guy Wicks Field and walked away with one-goal victories. The Vandals played UNLV to a scoreless tie for 108 minutes, before allowing the golden goal in the waning moments of the final overtime. Without a game on Friday this week the Vandals have an extra day to recover and prep for the ‘Lopes.
“With playing a double-overtime game over the weekend it’s always nice for the girls to get an extra day here and there,” Showler expressed. “We have been working hard early on this week. We will keep pushing the things we have been doing well and work on our strengths. There are a lot of positive to build on from the weekend.”
Grand Canyon (1-5-0) enters the weekend as the lowest scoring team in the WAC. They have managed only one goal in 2013. The lone goal also gave Grand Canyon its lone win, a 1-0 shutout of Colorado State, also new to Division I soccer in 2013. The ‘Lopes have kept in games on the defensive side of the field, allowing a WAC best eight goals this season. The ‘Lopes begin WAC play on Friday at Seattle U, before heading east to Moscow.
