|Vandals excellent in BSU event|
BOISE, Idaho – Jose Bendeck won an all-Idaho top-flight singles final at the Dar Walters Tennis Classic hosted by Boise State over the weekend as several Idaho men’s tennis players had success in the event.
Bendeck beat teammate Cristobal Ramos Salazar 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the finals after a semifinal that featured three Idaho players. Artemiy Nikitin, the top seed in the draw, won his first three singles matches before falling in three sets to Ramos Salazar.
The top doubles flight was also dominated by Vandals, as Bendeck and Ramos teamed up as did Nikitin and Odon Barta to reach the championship match which was not played.
“This was a very positive weekend for many guys and to have three of the four semi-finalists in the top singles flight and both doubles finalists is a first for me in my time at Idaho,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said.
Andrew Zedde reached the quarterfinals in the second-flight, while Filip Fichtel reached the second-flight finals after a first round singles loss in the main draw.
The Vandals will return to action against an elite field in the ITA Regional Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 16-20.
“We have several guys who can compete for titles at the upcoming regional if they carry this momentum,” Beaman said. “They have fixed a few small things with their games and I am proud of many of the guys accomplishments from making finals to the ones that fought back after first round losses to make consolation final.”
