MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho soccer team will travel to Phoenix, Ariz., to begin the second half of the Western Athletic Conference schedule. The Vandals are set to take on Grand Canyon University for the second time this season. Idaho won the inaugural meeting between the two teams, 3-1.
“It is interesting because it the first time the WAC has done this [play conference teams twice],” head coach Pete Showler said. “They [Grand Canyon] will be more prepared about our game and we will be more prepared about how they play.”
The first matchup between the two schools was back on Septembers 22. The Vandals opened the WAC season with their first win of 2013. Freshman Alyssa Pease and junior Katie Baran both scored goals on the day and GCU added an own goal in between to aid the Vandals cause. GCU led Idaho in total shots, 19-12, but shots on goal were even at five.
“We still have a lot to prove, and the girls know that,” Showler stated. “We strive to achieve that at every practice. We have to go into each game and take it game-by-game and hopefully get a win.”
Heading into the weekend games, Idaho sits tied for second with Kansas City and Utah Valley in the WAC standings. GCU and CSU Bakersfield both have four conference points and are tied for fifth. The ‘Lopes are coming off their first win of the season against New Mexico State. GCU escaped double overtime with a 2-1 victory.
Grand Canyon will welcome Seattle U on Friday, before preparing for the Vandals on Sunday. First kick on Sunday is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. PT.
