|Vandals wrap up ITA Regional|
LAS VEGAS – Idaho women’s tennis player Victoria Lozano reached the round of 16 in singles at the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament before falling, advancing deeper into the draw than any other Vandal before being eliminated.
Lozano beat the No. 9 seed in the tournament, Denver’s Caroline Schnell, to reach round of 16. Almudena Sanz won her first singles match to reach the round of 32 while Bety Flores and Galina Bykova each lost their first singles match. Both of Idaho’s doubles pairings - Sanz teamed up with Lozano while Bykova and Flores played together - reached the round of 16 in the doubles draw.
“I am very pleased with this trip to Regionals,” Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said. “I saw a lot of positive things. Every girl transferred what they’ve worked on since the beginning of the semester and learned from previous tournaments. They really imposed their own game and played great tennis and earn important wins against seeded players in the tournament.”
Idaho has one remaining tournament on its fall schedule, the Bulldog Classic hosted by Fresno State Nov. 1-3.
“Looking forward, we will train hard for the next couple weeks to be ready for our last tournament of the fall in Fresno, where get a chance to face great competition before the spring season,” Sopel said.
