Idaho dropped to 1-7 after losing last weekend at Ole Miss, while Texas State is 5-3 and coming off of a 33-31 home victory over South Alabama.
PAUL PETRINO is in his first season at Idaho and his first as a head coach. While it is his first head coaching job, it is not Petrino’s first stint at Idaho. His coaching career began at Carroll College (his alma mater, 1989). From Carroll, he went to Idaho where he coached running back, receivers and special teams from 1992-94. From Idaho it was on to Utah State (1995-97), Louisville (1998-99), Southern Mississippi (2000-02), Louisville (2003-06), Atlanta Falcons (2007), Arkansas (2008-09), Illinois (2010-11) and Arkansas (2012).
DENNIS FRANCHIONE is in his third season as head coach at Texas State after a three-year hiatus from coaching. A graduate of Pittsburg (Kan.) State University, his coaching career began with four seasons in the high school ranks before his first collegiate job at Kansas State (1978-80). He went on to serve assistantships at Southern (1981-82) and Tennessee Tech (1983-84) before head coaching jobs at Pittsburg State (1985-89), Southwest Texas State (1990-1991), New Mexico (1992-1997), TCU (1998-2000), Alabama (2001-02) and Texas A&M (2003-07).
Idaho is playing the 2013 season as an FBS independent before rejoining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. The Vandals have been independent previously – 1893-1907 and 1959-62. There are six other independent FBS programs – Army, BYU, Navy, New Mexico State, Notre Dame and Old Dominion.
The series first was played when Texas State was known as Southwest Texas. Idaho leads the series,which first was played in 1996, 3-2. Texas State won (38-7) last year at San Marcos.
There is being broadcast regionally on SWX, Spokane as well as KTVB/KTVT in the Treasure and Magic valley regions of Idaho, and on Altitude Sports.
