SEATTLE—The University of Idaho soccer team’s efforts came up short on Friday at Championship Field. The regular season Western Athletic Conference Champions, Seattle U, shutout the Vandals 3-0.

“The first twenty five minutes or so we played really well,” head coach Pete Showler stated. “We had them on their back foot for a little while. The first goal was a tough one to go down to.”

Taylor Ritzman got the Redhawks on the board first, providing the eventual game-winner in the 28th minute. Stephanie Verdoia broke past the Vandal defense on the right wing and passed the ball to a wide open Ritzman just off the goal line who tapped the ball across the goal line into the empty net.

Ritzman netted her third point of the game on Seattle U’s second goal. She crossed the ball into Natasha Howe from the right wing. How fielded the ball seven yards out and beat a shifting Marina Siegl, putting the ball in the lower right corner.

“We just lost to the conference champions,” Showler said. “Obviously we are disappointed. We have to pick ourselves up and know that Sunday is it. Seattle U is a fantastic team and they do what they do very well. We saw a lot of good signs from the girls when it was needed and we need to build on those going into Sunday’s game, which I’m sure we will.”

Seattle U (14-2-2, 11-0-0 WAC) started fast, opening with the game’s first scoring chance 55 seconds into the game. Stephanie Verdoia recorded the first shot of the game, forcing Siegl to make a diving save right off the bat.

Idaho (4-14-0, 4-7-0 WAC) recorded four shots on the day, but offensively could not gain any momentum. Kaysha Darcy recorded the only Vandal shot on goal. Defensively Siegl was credited with two saves.

Verdioa added a second-half goal to close out the day’s scoring in the 71st minute.

The Vandals are still position in the fourth and final WAC Tournament slot, two points ahead of CSU Bakersfield. The Roadrunners lost 1-0 at UMKC and will face New Mexico State on Sunday. Idaho will host the same Seattle U team to close out the regular season.

Idaho will honor the six members of the 2013 graduating class on Sunday in a pregame ceremony on Guy Wicks Field.

Notes: Senior defender Chelsie Breen moved into fourth place on the all-time games started list. She has now started 78 games in her career….freshman keeper Torell Stewart entered the game in the 78th minute.
