LAS CRUCES, N.M.—For the third time in eight days the Idaho soccer team will square off against the Redhawks of Seattle U. The two teams will open the Western Athletic Conference Tournament at 10:30 a.m. PT at the New Mexico State Soccer Athletic Complex. The Vandals have now qualified for the WAC Tournament in four consecutive season, dating back to 2010.

“The girls are relaxed and they know they are here to represent the University of Idaho,” head coach Pete Showler stated on Thursday. “They have the opportunity to do something that no team in Idaho history has done and that is to potentially reach the WAC final. They know what is required of them. They have been practicing well. They have been very buoyant and bubbly. We are looking forward to facing Seattle.”

Seattle U finished the regular season with an undefeated record in league play, entering this weekend’s WAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Redhawks are riding a 13-game winning streak into the tournament, during which they’ve allowed just four goals dating back to Sept. 20.

One of those goals came in last Sunday’s matchup in Moscow. Graduating junior Katie Baran scored the fastest goal of the 2013 season, heading the ball into the Seattle U net 59 seconds into the game. In the past two games against Seattle U, the Vandals have been outshot 12-4, in the shots on goal category. Keepers Marina Siegl and Torell Stewart have combined for seven saves.

Having played Seattle U the in the last two matchups, showing great improvements from game-to-game the Vandals hope that the third time is in fact the charm.

“We know what they are capable of,” Showler said. “They have produced the goods. We need to go out and show them what we are capable of. We will put our hat in the mix and see what happens at the end of it. We are as well prepared can be and we are going to give it a shot.”

The winner of Friday’s match will play the winner of UMKC (No. 2) and Utah Valley (No. 3) on Sunday for in the championship match. The conference crown along with its automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament will be up for grabs. Sunday’s game will be at 11:00 a.m. PT. All games will be lived streamed through the WAC. Live stats will also be available.
