MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho women’s basketball team visited three area elementary schools to help promote the athletic department’s Readers as Leaders program on Wednesday. The academic program rewards students who reach reading goals throughout the school year.
The team and coaching staff visited Russell Elementary, St. Mary’s second grade class and Lena Whitmore Elementary prior to Wednesday's afternoon practice. The players shared their favorite books and school activities, answered questions from students and enjoyed a school-cafeteria lunch.
“I think it is really important for us all to be really good role models for the kids in the community,” senior Alyssa Charlston said. “It is good to come out into the community and reach out to these kids and play with them at recess and show them the importance of learning to read and write.”
Program reading goals are established by teachers, and students earn rewards as they achieve those goals. One such reward is the Readers as Leaders T-shirt, which the students can wear for free admittance to any home Idaho men's or women’s basketball game for the 2013-14 season.
Idaho is 9-7 on the season, and 2-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2003-04 season. The Vandals play two games at home in the Cownan Spectrum this week.
First up for the Vandals is Texas-Pan American at 6 p.m. on Thursday. UTPA beat the Grand Canyon University Antelopes, 60-58, in the first Western Athletic Conference game in program history. It was the Broncs’ first win in a conference with an automatic qualifier (AQ) into the NCAA Tournament since Feb. 24, 1997, and their first home win in an AQ conference since Feb. 15, 1997, both of which were Sun Belt Conference victories over Lamar. Freshman Shawnte’ Goff led four Broncs in double-figures scoring with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal.
Thursday night’s game is Daddy/Daughter Night. Daughters 18 and under are free with a paying adult. After the game junior Maren Austgulen will be signing autographs.
The Vandals will take on New Mexico State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Select members of the Idaho women’s basketball team will continue promoting the Readers as Leaders program on Friday, Jan. 10, appearing at the Genesee School.
