|Griz drop Idaho in finale|
MISSOULA, Mont. – The Idaho women’s tennis team lost for just the fifth time this season in its regular season finale at Montana, falling 4-3 to the Griz.
Montana got the early advantage by taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Montana went ahead 3-0 with wins at No. 4 and No. 3 singles before Idaho’s Victoria Lozano won in three sets at No. 1 and Almudena Sanz did the same at No. 2. Rita Bermudez won at No. 6 singles for Idaho but by then Montana had sealed the match with a win at No. 5.
“It’s a tough loss to a very good Montana team that has competed great at home,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “Our team came out the flattest I’ve seen at 1 and 2 doubles this year. At one we clawed our way back and started to give ourselves a chance, but it’s a match against a tough team and you can’t come out like we did and expect the beat them.”
The Vandals finish the regular season with a 17-5 overall record. The Western Athletic Conference tournament is Apr. 25-27 in Las Cruces, N.M. Montana imrpoves to 15-7 with the win.
“We can definitely learn from this and use it as a wake-up call going into the conference tournament,” Beaman said. “There were some positives, it’s certainly something we can improve on. We expect more of ourselves, and we are focused on our goal of winning a WAC championship.”
