LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The top-seeded Idaho women’s tennis team cruised into the Western Athletic Conference championship match with a 4-0 win over No. 5 Kansas City in the WAC semifinals on Saturday morning in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Vandals got a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 from Victoria Lozano, a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 from Belen Barcenilla and a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 from Rita Bermudez before Galina Bykova clinched the match with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 win at No. 3. Almudena Sanz led 6-4, 4-1 at No. 2 singles when Idaho clinched the victory.

"The team did a great job of keeping its focus after a good day of practice yesterday," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said.

Because of the threat of poor afternoon weather, the men's and women's semifinal matches started at the same time on Saturday, and Beaman successfully coached both Idaho teams to tomorrow's finals.

"It was very challenging coaching both teams at the same time but the players did a great job of keeping their focus high throughout the day," Beaman said.

Due to weather, the match began with singles play, with doubles on the docket only in the case of a 3-3 tie after singles.

Idaho improves to 18-5 on the season with the win. The Vandals will take on No. 3 New Mexico State in Sunday’s championship match. The time of that match will be determined later based on weather.
