|Marboe, Rehkow first team preseason|
University of Idaho center Mike Marboe (senior, Wenatchee, Wash.) and punter Austin Rehkow (sophomore, Veradale, Wash.) earned first-team preseason all-Sun Belt Conference recognition after a vote of the league’s coaches. Defensive end Maxx Forde (senior, Woodinville, Wash.) is on the second team.
“Preseason all-conference is a good honor,” coach Paul Petrino said. “It’s great for Mike and Austin to be picked first team. Mike’s a three-year starter and done a real good job. I’m looking forward to having him as a four-year starter at center. Austin was a first-team All-American last year so it’s pretty obvious he’s first team.”
Marboe is a three-year member of the Rimington Award Watch List and has 36 successive starts at center. His successive starts at center are fourth among the nation’s active offensive linemen.
Rekhow led the nation in punting in 2013 with an average of 47.8 yards per kick. He was a Walter Camp All-American after a season during which he set the NCAA freshman record for punting. His average also was an NCAA best for punters who punted 75 or more times in a season.
Forde has been a mainstay on the defensive front breaking into the starting lineup as a sophomore in 2012. He was the Vandals’ fourth-leading tackler in 2013 with 63 total tackles (44 solo and 19 assists). He also had nine tackles for loss, which includes 5½ quarterback sacks.
The league’s top two teams from 2013 – Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State, were the leaders in preseason all-conference selections. Arkansas State led in total with six first-teamers and five second-team choices, while UL-Lafayette has eight first-team choices and two second-team selections. South Alabama and Texas State have eight each with UL-Monroe earning six. Idaho has four and is followed by Troy with three, Georgia Southern with two and Georgia State with one.
The Vandals open fall camp on Monday, Aug. 4, with their first practice at 6 p.m. They kick off the 2014 season on Aug. 30 at The Swamp against Florida.
