MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho fell behind early and never caught up in a 4-0 loss in a non-conference match-up against Big Sky foe Eastern Washington.

The Vandals gave up two goals in the first half within six minutes of each other, then gave up two scores in the second half, including an own goal bouncing off a Vandal defender into the back of the net.

The loss drops Idaho to 0-3-0 on the season, while the Eagles move to 2-1-0.

“To be honest the only place Eastern Washington dominated was on the scoreboard,” head coach Derek Pittman said. “I thought we held our own in some areas. Shots were relatively even along with shots on goal.”

The Eagles outshot Idaho 14-11 overall and 9-6 on goal. EWU earned nine corner kicks to Idaho’s one.

Freshman goalkeeper Kimberly Gerken saw action for her first time in the fall season entering the game in the 70th minute relieving sophomore goalkeeper Torell Stewart. Stewart ended the day with three saves.

“Kimberly deserved a chance, she had a good last couple weeks of practice and has shown that she is coming on and closing the gap with her competition,” Pittman said. “She deserved to go out and put herself in there. She did a good job and I was proud of her.”

Junior JP Burgess led the team with three total shots and two on-target attempts. While freshman Chloe Bell and sophomore Alyssa Lloyd both added two total shots and one on goal attempt each.

“We got into good areas to possibly score goals. We have got to be more composed in and around the box to hit the target and not settle for a shot from 30 yards and a bad angle,” Pittman said. “We have to do what we know how to do to create better scoring opportunities.”

Idaho travels to Spokane, Wash., to faceoff against Gonzaga on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. The game is broadcast through the West Coast Conference. Visit the WCC to gain free access to the game.
