SALT LAKE CITY The University of Idaho men’s basketball team was selected to finish in ninth place in its third season in the Western Athletic Conference as voted by the media and the conference head coaches.

“I understand why we are ranked where we are and our goal is to change that perception,” Idaho coach George Pfeifer said. “We don’t put much stock in polls. A lot is based on who you have returning and not on who is coming in.”

Utah State received four first-place votes and 58 points to be picked first in the coaches poll while New Mexico State earned the top spot in the media poll with 13 first-place votes and 255 points. The teams also alternated second-place positions with New Mexico State earning three first-place votes and 57 points in the coaches poll and Utah State earning 10 first-place points and 250 points in the media poll.

Nevada garnered the third spot in both poll and received one-first place vote in the coaches poll and seven in the media poll. Fresno State was the consensus fourth-place pick and earned the final first-place vote in the coaches poll.

Boise State was picked fifth and Hawai`i sixth in both polls. Louisiana Tech and San Jose State tied for seventh in the coaches poll while the Bulldogs were picked ahead of the Spartans in the media poll. Idaho was picked ninth to round out both polls.

Utah State’s Jaycee Carroll was the consensus Preseason Player of the Year and New Mexico State’s Herb Pope was selected as the Preseason Newcomer of the Year by the media.
