Madison earns WAC preseason recognition

SALT LAKE CITY The Idaho women’s basketball team was ranked eighth in the media and ninth among coaches in the Western Athletic Conference preseason polls on Wednesday, while sophomore post Katie Madison earned a spot on both All-WAC teams.

Madison was named to the All-WAC Second Team in the coaches poll and the All-WAC Team in the media poll. The media poll did not feature first and second teams.

Madison earned Second Team All-WAC mention at the end of last season, as well as the WAC Newcomer of the Year award. She led the WAC in scoring with a 19.1 per game average as a true freshman. She was the top-scoring freshman in the nation last season.

The Vandal women earned 27 points in the media poll to finish eighth just ahead of San Jose State, which garnered 25 points in the poll. Five different teams earned first place votes in the poll, led by Boise State, which finished with nine votes and 128 points.

Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State earned two first-place votes apiece, while Nevada and Fresno State each got a single vote.

In the coaches poll, Idaho got 11 votes to finish ninth in the preseason WAC rankings. Boise State received seven of nine first place votes to start the season as the league favorite, while Nevada and Louisiana Tech took the other two first-place votes to finish second and third, respectively.

The Vandals finished last season with a 6-22 (3-13 WAC) record and tied for eighth in the conference. The team returns six letterwinners and three starters, including Madison and the WAC’s 2006-07 assist leader, sophomore Charlotte Otero.
