University of Idaho senior defensive end Josh Shaw, a graduate of Spokane’s Lewis and Clark High School, was recognized as the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Vandals’ 20-14 victory over New Mexico State.
Shaw, a four-year starter for Idaho, had 10 total tackles, which includes eight solo stops and two assists. Among his three tackles-for-loss were two sacks. All told, he was responsible for 18 yards in losses for the Aggies. He also forced one fumble and had one quarterback hurry.
His first sack came on New Mexico State’s first possession when they were at the Idaho 26. He tackled NMSU quarterback Chase Holbrook for a seven-yard loss to force a fourth-down-and-17 for the Aggies, who yielded the ball on downs.
Shaw’s second sack came on the Aggies’ final drive when he caught Holbrook for a 10-yard loss.
He ended NMSU’s first drive of the second half when he forced a fumble by Tonny Glynn to give the ball to Idaho at its own 38. The Vandals stalled at the NMSU 35 but were able to take the lead for good when Tino Amancio connected on a 52-yard field goal.
