FLORENCE, Ariz. - Kayla Mortellaro opened the Northern Migration Invitational atop the leader board with a first-round 68, which helped the University of Idaho women's golf team to a collective 299 - just one stroke back of leader Texas-San Antonio.
Morning delays led to front nine struggles but coach Lisa Johnson said the Vandals found a way to regroup at the turn.
"We didn't adjust very well at the beginning," said Johnson, whose team is ranked 36th nationally by GolfStat.com, while Mortellaro is 25th in the nation. "However, we were able to rebound on the back. We played the back nine extremely well.
"We played very solid and we look forward to the next two days."
In Mortellaro's 68 were five birdies. She has a two-stroke lead over Iowa State's Victoria Stefansen, who is at 70.
Also for Idaho, Annika Karlsson is tied for 18th at 75, Teo Poplawski is tied for 38th at 77, and Amanda Jacobs and Frida Nilsson are in a group tied at 51st at 79.
