|Men's basketball announces 2010-11 schedule|
MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Idaho men's basketball team released its 2010-11 schedule on Monday with a slate that includes 12 home games and the first regular-season tournament in Moscow in 21 years.
"I truly believe our schedule has come together with a nice blend of Northwest opponents, as well as some quality home games that should prepare our team for the Western Athletic Conference," Idaho head coach Don Verlin said.
The Vandals play three of their first five games on the road and all against Northwest rivals. Idaho opens the season against Eastern Oregon on Nov. 13, then renews the oldest continuous rivalry West of the Mississippi at Washington State on Nov. 16. Portland will visit Memorial Gym on Nov. 20 and the Vandals will finish out the month at Montana on the 22nd and Eastern Washington on the 27th.
"We should find out a lot about our team in the month of November," Verlin said.
Idaho hosts North Dakota, Monmouth and Eastern Michigan in the BTI Classic on December 3-5 at Memorial Gym. It will mark the first regular-season tournament Idaho has hosted since the Palouse Classic in 1989-90.
"We're very excited to bring the BTI Classic to Moscow," Verlin said. "It should be a great event for the Vandal faithful."
The month of December includes trips to Seattle University and Oregon, as well as a home game against Montana. WAC play begins Dec. 29 and 31 with home games against New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech, respectively, at the Cowan Spectrum.
"We start WAC play after Christmas, and as always, it will be a huge challenge for our program," Verlin said. "It's one that I know our players will be looking forward to."
Key conference games at Cowan Spectrum will be Nevada on Jan. 12, Boise State on Jan. 22 in what will be a men's-women's rivalry doubleheader, and Utah State on Feb. 9.
The Vandals added non-conference games against Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 15 and Seattle University on March 5 among the WAC schedule, as well as the Feb. 19 ESPNU BracketBuster game, which will be announced at a later date.
The Western Athletic Conference Tournament, which makes its move to Las Vegas at the Orleans Arena in 2011, will take place March 10-12.
The first chance for the public to see the Vandals in action will be Friday, Oct. 22, when the team hosts its annual Vandal Black & Gold Scrimmage at Memorial Gym. Idaho will also play a pair of exhibition contests on Oct. 30 against Northwest Christian and Nov. 6 against Lewis-Clark State College.
