|Cirstea, Akbar end with win|
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - Idaho men's tennis players Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea closed out the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships with an 8-5 win over Columbia's Winston Lin and Bert Vancura to win their consolation draw.
The Idaho doubles pairing finished the tournament with a 2-1 record after falling in the main draw to a California team and beating a duo from USC in the first round of consolation play.
"This was a really great way to finish the weekend after a rough start," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "They continued to raise their level to follow up their great win against USC with another great win against a tough Columbia team that had home court and the home crowd behind it."
The tournament, hosted by Columbia and played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, featured 20 of the top doubles pairings in the country.
"I was very impressed with both the guys," Beaman said. "I'm excited to see what they can do moving forward and where they end up in the next rankings."
