DENVER - Idaho men's tennis player Abid Akbar has earned his second Western Athletic Conference Player of the Month award of the fall, the conference announced Thursday.

Akbar, a senior from Islamabad, Pakistan teamed up with fellow senior Marius Cirstea to win the consolation doubles draw at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships with wins over pairings from USC and Columbia after an opening round loss to Cal. Ben McLachlan, one of the players in Cal's doubles pairing that beat the Idaho duo in the opening round, is ranked No. 23 in the nation in doubles. 2012 marked the second consecutive year Idaho tennis was represented in the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, and the first year the Idaho player or pairing won a match. Akbar also competed in the Pacific Northwest Intercollegiate, where he went 1-1 in singles play.

"This is a great accomplishment for these guys to go to the National Indoors and get the wins they achieved," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said of the Abkar/Cirstea pairing. "It would have been amazing if two people could get this award, it was a great accomplishment for both of them, but I'm also really happy for Abid to get this award for the second time this year."

Akbar also earned WAC Player of the Month honors in September of this year.
