SKILLMAN, N.J. - Four Idaho tennis players are receiving recognition in national and regional rankings, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its first rankings of 2013.
The Idaho men's doubles pairing of Abid Akbar and Marius Cirstea checked in at No. 46 in the nation and No. 1 in the Mountain Region after winning the ITA regional doubles championship and advancing to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in the fall.
"It's great to see both programs being recognized," Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. "This is a strong region. I feel Abid and Marius have the chance to be a top national team, and they have to potential to continue to move up in the rankings this spring."
Akbar is also ranked No. 7 in the Mountain Region singles rankings.
"Abid had a great fall and that is shown by his regional singles rank," Beaman said. "I'm excited to see what he can do this spring as a senior."
On the women's side, Almudena Sanz and Victoria Lozano are ranked No. 10 in Mountain Region doubles, while Sanz is No. 13 in the region in singles.
"Almudena finished very strong last year and carried it into the fall. I see both her and Vicky ending the year ranked in doubles and both of them being able to make their way into the national singles rankings."
The Vandal men begin the spring season on Jan. 20 at Eastern Washington, while the Idaho women open play on Jan. 19 at Washington State.
