PORTLAND, Ore. - A long day of tennis produced two more victories for the Idaho men's tennis team, as the Vandals gutted out a 4-3 win at Portland before rolling to a 7-0 against Portland State to remain undefeated on the season.

The Vandals improve to 9-0 on the season, and now have five wins by a 7-0 margin. Idaho's victory at Portland, however, was by the slimmest of margins. The Vandals narrowly won the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles from Cristobal Ramos Salazar and Jose Bendeck after the Vandals and Pilots split the No. 1 and No. 3 matches.

At No. 1 singles, Dmitry Perevoshchikov fell 7-6 in the first set and was leading 5-2 in the second when Portland's Ratan Gill retired, giving the Vandals the point. Abid Akbar fell at No. 2 singles, and Marius Cirstea fell at No. 3. Cesar Torres lost 6-0 in the first set at No. 4 but battled back to win 6-1, 6-4 in the next two sets to take the point. Jose Bendeck fell at No. 5 singles but Salazar won a three-setter at No. 6.

The Vandals won all three doubles matches against Portland State, and swept through singles, winning five of the six matches in straight sets.

"Portland is a tough, well-coached team that competes very well, and we barely came out of there with the win," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "The guys pushed themselves against Portland State and took care of business to end a very long day of tennis."

The Vandals return to action March 2 when they face Montana and Montana State in Missoula, Mont.
