PULLMAN, Wash. – The Idaho men’s tennis team improved to 3-0 in Western Athletic Conference play and 18-2 for the season on Friday with a 5-2 WAC win over New Mexico State on the campus of Washington State University.

“It’s a good final score and it’s a big win against the number two team in the conference,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “It could have really gone either way. Guys stepped up when they needed to and the ones who were still out there when we clinched kept competing. They kept fighting right till the end which is good with the tough matches we have coming up.”

Idaho won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 from Marius Cirstea and Abid Akbar (8-6) and No. 3 from Dmitry Perevoshchikov and Cesar Torres (8-2). Perevoshchikov won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Cirstea bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, Jose Bendeck won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Cristobal Ramos Salazar won 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6. Akbar fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Torres lost 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 5

New Mexico State falls to 10-7 with the loss and 1-1 in WAC play.

The Vandals have three tough matches looming. Idaho will face SMU in Dallas, Texas, on March 31, visit WAC foe UT Arlington on April 1 then travel to Stillwater, Okla., to face Oklahoma State on April 2.

“It’s going to be harsh conditions and good teams that we’re playing so it’ll be interesting to see how we respond, especially with four matches in five days,” Beaman said of the upcoming trip.
