SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Idaho women’s tennis team grinded out a 4-3 Western Athletic Conference win over UTSA on Friday, evening its WAC record at 1-1 for the season.
Bety Flores broke the 3-3 overall tie and clinched the victory for Idaho with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Miranda Poile. Victoria Lozano won 6-1, 7-6(1) at No. 1, Belen Barcenilla won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 and the Vandals won at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to get the 4-3 win.
"This is a great team win,” Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said. “Everybody contributed to this win, and they all gave their best effort from the first point.”
The Vandals improve to 7-8 on the season overall and will face New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech in San Antonio to wrap up the weekend. Idaho then heads home to host Seattle U, San Jose State and Texas State in WAC play on April 12, 13 and 14.
“The girls realize the core of the season starts now and this is our most important weekend of the season,” Sopel said. “This match is a great tight win for the confidence and we are ready to take on NMSU tomorrow"
