|VB ends spring on high note|
MOSCOW – The Idaho volleyball team wrapped up its spring season by winning two out of three sets against Eastern Washington in Memorial Gym on Friday night.
The Vandals won the first set 25-23, lost 25-19 in the second and won 27-25 in the third.
“We still have our ups and downs, we’re still working through a lot of stuff and parts of our game are pretty young, but I thought we’ve made a ton of improvement this spring,” assistant coach Steve Whitaker said. “The connection between the setter and our hitters has drastically changed and that’s going to keep on getting better. Passing-wise, we’ve made an improvement as well.”
Setter Meredith Coba, who will be a redshirt-sophomore this fall, agrees that the offense made great improvements this spring. After sitting behind a pair of upperclassmen for the last two seasons, Coba is excited about getting her chance to run the offense.
“Our offense has really sped up and we have been connecting both setting and hitting, so that has been awesome,” Coba said. “I feel like the two years that I’ve been waiting has paid off, I’ve been working for it. Just watching Jenny (Feicht) and Ryann (Carter) for two years and seeing what they’ve done, it’s awesome to finally get my chance, it feels great.”
With six seniors, including five starters, gone from the 2012 team, Coba is just one of several young players getting their shot at a starting spot.
“I’m pretty pleased, there have been some surprises,” Whitaker said of the returning group. “Some of the girls are coming out of their shells because they have to. They’re putting in the time in the gym to go over the stuff they need to get better on. Overall it has been good, they have stepped up.”
