POCATELLO, Idaho—The University of Idaho women’s soccer team fell to instate rival Idaho State, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Davis Field. The Vandals were unable to find the back of the net for the second-straight game to open the season.

“This afternoon was night and day from Weber State,” head coach Pete Showler said. “We played with better organization today. We are never happy to lose 2-0, but we took huge steps in the right direction.”

Continuing the early season trend, the Vandals played the Bengals tight in the first half, despite being outshot 9-2. Idaho State (2-0-0) found the back of the net when Jessica Sanchez slipped the game-winner past Marina Siegl at the 38:49 mark of the first half. Siegl came out of the net to challenge the bouncing ball, but Sanchez got to the ball first and sent it by the left post and in. The Bengals then wasted no time, notching their second goal in the 41st minute.  Amanda Ellsworth got credit for the goal after the ball was crossed into the box and deflected in by Vandal defender Amanda Pease.

“The last 10 min in first half cost us dearly," Showler commented “Losing two starters from Friday we had to play more freshmen. At times we had six or seven freshmen on the field and they stepped up. It was a good learning experience and we are getting better game-by-game.”

Idaho (0-2-0) came out in the second half and picked up the intensity, launching five shots in the half. Freshman keeper Torell Stewart relieved Siegl in net at the start of the period and made three saves, keeping Idaho State at bay. Midfielder Elexis Schlossarek and defender Chelsie Breen led the team with two shots apiece.

The physicality of play picked up in the second half with both teams finishing with double-digit fouls. Idaho State was also awarded three yellow cards in the half.

“They play well at home and they are hard to break down,” Showler stated. “They are competitive and we played tough where we needed to. I am much happier with the performance today.”

The Vandals will return to the pitch when they travel down road to Pullman, Wash., to take on the Pac 12 rival Washington State, Friday Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. PT.
