SPOKANE, Wash – The University of Idaho men’s and women’s cross country team opened up the 2013 season with a talented group of primarily newcomers and freshman on Saturday at the Clash of the Inland Northwest.

The Vandal women’s team finished the day in second, while the men took third.

Idaho director of track and field/cross country Wayne Phipps said there are always a number of difficult things to accomplish in the very first meet and it is important to get them out racing and get the rust off.

“We had a number of freshmen compete in their first collegiate race and some who hadn’t raced in quite some time,” Phipps said. “I thought considering all of those things the team did very well.”

Returning sophomore Halie Raudenbush lead the way for the Idaho women with a first-place overall finish in 14:20.0 followed by senior Holly (Stanton) Browning (9th, 14:48.0) and sophomore Stephanie Rexus (15:01.0).

“Halie had an awesome freshman year and has continued to improve,” Phipps said. “For her to come out and win that race in the time that she ran is very impressive.”

Also running for Idaho on Saturday were freshman Emma Balazs (18th, 15:04.0), Alex Siemens (23rd, 15:11.0) and Ally Ginther (27th, 15:15.0).

For the Vandal men, junior transfer Cody Helbling set the pace with his 19:04.0 12th overall finish he was followed closely by freshman Nicholas Boersma in 15th with a time of 19:11.0.

Returning sophomore Santos Vargas was 18th overall in 19:16.0, while freshman Mickey Day finished 25th (19:37.0) and freshman Tim Delcourt was 29th (19:42.0).

The Vandals have a two-week break from action before their next competition, when the team travels to Seattle, Wash., for the Sundodger Invitation on Saturday Sept. 14.
