The Vandals are 0-4 after falling at Washington State last weekend. The Owls are coming off a bye after an 0-3 start to the season.
Paul Petrino is in his first season at Idaho and his first as a head coach. While it is his first head coaching job, it is not Petrino’s first stint at Idaho. His coaching career began at Carroll College (his alma mater, 1989). From Carroll, he went to Idaho where he coached running back, receivers and special teams from 1992-94. From Idaho it was on to Utah State (1995-97), Louisville (1998-99), Southern Mississippi (2000-02), Louisville (2003-06), Atlanta Falcons (2007), Arkansas (2008-09), Illinois (2010-11) and Arkansas (2012).
Matt Rhule is in his first season as head coach at Temple. He graduated from Penn State where he was a linebacker for the Nittany Lions from 1994-97. He coached previously at Albright, Buffalo, UCLA and Western Carolina. He has been at Temple, the exception for the 2012 season as an assistant for the New York Giants, since being hired as the defensive line coach in 2006.
Idaho is playing the 2013 season as an FBS independent before rejoining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. The Vandals have been independent previously – 1893-1907 and 1959-62. There are six other independent FBS programs – Army, BYU, Navy, New Mexico State, Notre Dame and Old Dominion.
This is the first meeting between Idaho and Temple. It is the third game between Idaho and a team from Pennsylvania. The Vandals played Villanova (Philadelphia) in 1974 and Lehigh (Bethelem) in 1993.
Saturday’s game is being produced by Spokane’s SWX and will be broadcast on various regional outlets as well as Altitude. Sam Adams and Bill Ames will be calling the action.
This is the University of Idaho’s Homecoming week and Saturday’s game is the 111th Homecoming game. With the exception of World War II (1943, 1944), homecoming games have been played annually since 1901. The Vandals are 61-45-4 in Homecoming games, which includes 9-4 this century and 2-1 since 2010. Since 1960, they are 40-11-1. Homecoming week began Sunday with the Vandals’ soccer game against Grand Canyon and continued with events throughout the week. The weekend finale includes:
- Friday – Golden I Reunion, Homecoming Serpentine, Bonfire Rally and crowning of the Homecoming court, Vandal Soccer vs. New Mexico State, Fireworks, Theophilus Tower Light Show
- Saturday – Pancake Feed, Parade, Vandals vs. Temple football, Volleyball vs. Cal State Bakersfield
- Sunday - Toast to Alunmi Brunch, Soccer vs. Missouri-Kansas City.
