MOSCOW, Idaho—The Idaho Vandals withstood the cold, rainy conditions on Sunday in front of the home crowd at Guy Wicks Field, but could not hold off the Kangaroos of Kansas City. After playing to a 1-1 regulation tie, the ‘Roos clinched the win in overtime, 2-1.

“For 70 minutes of the game we handled it well,” head coach Pete Showler stated. “For some reason we are not playing for 90 minutes yet and at this level that is not going to get it done. I feel we did enough in the first 70 to 80 minutes that we should have killed the team off. We let them hang around and give all credit to them they came out and stuck one in the net.”

Idaho (2-8-0, 2-1-0 WAC) began the days scoring with a goal in the 21st minute of play. Junior Katie Baran sent the ball into the goal box and found freshman Alyssa Lloyd. Lloyd took the ball off her chest just in front of the goal line and was able to tap it across for the goal. For Baran it was her second assist on the season, helping Lloyd record her first collegiate goal.

The Vandals took a 1-0 lead into the half, outshooting Kansas City 5-3 in the period.

At the start of the second half the wind and the rain became more of a presence. The ‘Roos came out and from the start of the second half attacked the Vandals defense. UMKC (5-6-1, 2-2-0 WAC) outshot Idaho in the second half and overtime, 11-5. In the 76th minute Kansas City broke though the Idaho defense and found the back of the net. Taylor Bare and Idaho keeper Torell Stewart raced to the loose ball. As the two approached the ball from opposite directions Stewart slid to hold on to the ball but could not control it leaving Bare with an empty net to tie the game at one goal apiece.

In the 100 minute UMKC sealed the deal with Bare’s second goal of the game.

The Vandals will get set for a three-game road trip. Next up on the schedule is a trip to Utah Valley on Oct. 4. Idaho will then travel down to CSU Bakersfield two days later and finish up on the road against Grand Canyon on Oct. 13. Idaho returns home on Oct. 18 to take on CSU Bakersfield.
