|Vandals win three draws at EWU|
CHENEY, Wash. – Idaho men’s tennis players combined to win three out of five main draws at the Eastern Washington Classic over the weekend.
Jose Bendeck beat teammate Cristobal Ramos Salazar in the Flight 1 finals, Andrew Zedde pulled out a three-set win in the Flight 2 finals and Bendeck and Ramos Salazar teamed up to win the top doubles flight.
“I was very pleased with our guys’ showings across the board,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “To have Jose and Cris play for the top flight final and Andrew win the 2nd flight shows we have a good chance to be one of the best teams in this area of the country again. Cris defeated a player he lost to a week ago at Baylor and GU’s top recruit which shows the progress he is making with his game.”
In the Flight 3 singles finals, Idaho senior Filip Fichtel was edged 6-4, 6-4 by Montana’s Peter Minagh-Fleming. Cesar Torres lost a tiebreak in the Flight 1 consolation finals and Sam Laudon won the Flight 3 consolation draw.
“I was also pleased that Filip had a strong showing coming back from his year ending knee injury last spring and it was great to see Sam battle thru to win the consolation of his flight,” Beaman said.
The Vandals will compete in the Boise State Fall Classic Oct. 4-6 before heading to the ITA Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 16-20.
