Pullman, Wash. – Sophie Vickers reached the singles championship match and teamed up with Belen Barcenilla to win the doubles draw in the Gray flight to lead the Idaho women’s tennis team at the Cougar Classic over the weekend.

Vickers won her first four singles matches, including a tight 6-4, 6-5 semifinal win over her teammate Barcenilla to reach the championship match, where she fell to Washington State’s Lize Leenknecht. In doubles play, Vickers and Barcenilla won all four of their matches, including a 6-2 in the finals over a WSU duo to win the Gray Flight’s main draw.

Idaho senior Victoria Lozano and freshman Galina Bykova each fell in the singles quarterfinals in the Crimson Flight after winning their first two matches, and the two paired up to reach the doubles semifinals.

"It was a very positive weekend," Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said. "They made great adjustments from last weekend and they applied what we worked on during the week of practice."

Almudena Sanz won her first-round singles match in the Crimson Flight and Rita Bermudez reached the quarterfinal of the Gray Flight with wins in her first two matches.

The Vandals will return to Pullman next weekend for the Washington State Invite Oct. 4-6.
