SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The University of Idaho men’s and women’s cross country team competed against some of the nation’s top runners on Saturday at the Dellinger Invitational and responded with strong performances.

“We held out two of our top runners,” Idaho director of track and field/cross country Wayne Phipps said. “But I thought we performed pretty well during the meet.”

On the men’s side junior Cody Helbling crossed the finish line first for the Vandals with his 34th place of 25:01. Freshman Nicholas Boersma was the second Vandal across the line with a time of 25:29. Sophomore Santos Vargas (25:52) and freshman Nathan Stark (26:08) were the third and fourth finishers for Idaho.

“The guys struggled with the early face pace,” Phipps said. “That is something the team needs to work on.”

For the women, sophomore Halie Raudenbush led the way at 20th overall with a time of 17:36. She was followed by senior Holly Browning-Stanton in 36th overall at 17:56, then freshman Ally Ginther at 18:16 and 50th overall.

“Halie is having a great season and I was very impressed by her today,” Phipps said. “Holly and Ally both ran an impressive race as well.”

The women finished in sixth place with 175 points, while the men placed seventh with 214 points.

Next on the schedule for the Vandals is a team split. Part of the squad with be at Sunnyvale, Calif., for the Bronco Invitational, while another group will travel to Lewiston, Idaho for the Inland Northwest Cross Country Classic.
